Alpha Foundation Specialists, Inc. was contacted by General Contractor D.R. Horton to install Drive Rite™ 2600 Series 2-7/8" Schedule 80 Helical Pipe Piles at the Solimar Subdivision in Okaloosa County, Florida.
The homes were to be constructed on sandy soils which had a layer of organic matter ranging from 5’ to 18’ deep. Due to the unpredictability of the depth of the highly organic soils helical piles were chosen for their ability to monitor the pile capacity during installation. Since termination depths varied it was the obvious solution to use helical piles over other piling methods.
Helical Piles were designed to be used in 18 houses in this subdivision. 20-35 piles were installed in every house with each residence taking less than 1 day to complete.
Each pile had a 12" pile cap bolted to the top for a termination connection embedded into the footing with 3" of cover on the bottom and sides. Pile installation was monitored through AFS triple safe system which monitors torque output through a Marion Technologies torque computer, PSI gauges, and a shear pin indicator.
