Crawl Space Humidity: Control It In Your Home Today!

Many homeowners face crawl space humidity problems and don’t know what to do. The age-old idea of airing out the crawl space has been proven a myth. A vented crawl space increases humidity rather than the opposite. Today, crawl space experts have done research and experimented with a number of crawl space encapsulation and dehumidification techniques to keep crawl spaces clean and dry all year round.

Seal the Crawl Space

Crawl space doors and windows are a definite source of humidity and moisture. To control this, seal these openings with a solution that provides an airtight, waterproof seal between the cold, humid outside air and your crawl space. A door made of wood or metal may be your first attempt, but, unfortunately, these materials rot and rust after time. The EverLast crawl space door is made out of -inch thick solid plastic that will keep your crawl space sealed for many years to come. With this solution, you will never have to worry about paint fading, corrosion, rot, or unwanted moist air entering your crawl space.

Another way to seal the crawl space is with vent covers. People used to keep vents open in an attempt to air the crawl space out, but this actually allowed more humidity and moisture to enter than intended. The solution to this was to actually cover the vents to keep outside air out, as well as insects, pests, and rodents. Sealing your crawl space with vent covers increases your home’s energy efficiency as well. When air is not escaping, your HVAC system will not have to work as hard to keep your home a comfortable temperature throughout the year.

Encapsulate the Crawl Space

A crawl space vapor barrier is a sure way to control the humidity and moisture in your home. Because the space under your home is naturally humid, damp and smelly, it’s important to install a vapor barrier that is meant for these specific conditions. The CleanSpace crawl space encapsulation system is a 20-mil thick vapor barrier with seven layers of high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, and polyester cord. It creates a healthier, drier, and brighter space that will reduce humidity and direct any water that does get in to a drainage system or sump pump.

Dehumidify the Crawl Space

The last way to remove humidity from the crawl space is to install a crawl space dehumidifier. This will keep your basement dry, warm and free of mold, by circulating air, drying air, and removing moisture year-round. One of the best crawl space dehumidifiers in the industry is the SaniDry CX trade; because it’s self-draining, powerful, and energy efficient. The SaniDry CX can remove up to 90 pints of water per day without needing to be emptied. This ensures that it can work through any conditions, including even hot, humid days in the summer!

If crawl space moisture is left alone for too long, it may become a breeding ground for mold spores that form in dark, damp areas. Don’t let this happen in your home! The combination or air sealing, encapsulation and a crawl space dehumidifier is the most effective way to make sure that moisture and humidity stay far away from your Florida crawl space.
